Gattuso Defends Barella Amidst Form Concerns Ahead of World Cup Playoffs
Italy manager Gennaro Gattuso has publicly backed Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella as the national team prepares for crucial FIFA World Cup playoff matches. The support comes amid increasing scrutiny of Barella’s recent performance, with critics pointing to a dip in form following a strong start to the Serie A season.
Recent Performance and Scrutiny
Whereas Barella enjoyed a promising start to the campaign, registering one goal and five assists in his first 13 Serie A appearances, his output has decreased in recent weeks. He has added only four assists in his subsequent 14 league games. Despite this decline, Barella remains a key player for Inter Milan, consistently selected by manager Cristian Chivu.
Gattuso’s Support and Injury Update
Addressing the media, Gattuso acknowledged Barella’s recent struggles but emphasized the high expectations placed upon him. “You all know about the problem he’s had,” Gattuso stated. “He’s been at Coverciano since yesterday morning, undergoing treatment. He has to keep working and recover properly – we hope to have him available. We thank him for his great commitment.”
Gattuso similarly defended Barella against harsh criticism, noting the quick shift in public perception. “Until recently, people were saying Dimarco is the best in his role. With players like Barella, people always expect the maximum. I expect intensity and desire. I speak to him every day.” He further highlighted Barella’s importance to the team, stating, “Over the years he’s shown he’s an essential player, and when he performs below his level, he gets heavily criticised.”
Italy’s Playoff Match
Italy will face Northern Ireland in a pivotal playoff tie on Thursday, with Barella’s availability still uncertain. Gattuso stressed the importance of focusing on preparation and maintaining a positive mindset within the squad. He emphasized that the team is not “running away” from the challenge and that injuries should not be used as excuses.
Continued Confidence in Barella
Despite the concerns surrounding his form, Gattuso clearly retains faith in Barella’s abilities. He acknowledged the pressure the midfielder faces but expressed confidence in his ability to overcome it and contribute to Italy’s World Cup qualification campaign. Gattuso also stated he speaks with Barella daily and believes in his commitment.
