A sharp shift in autumn weather is arriving across Italy as a cold air mass pushes down from the Balkans, bringing an end to months of persistent summer heat, according to forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). While neighboring countries like Spain and France continue to experience late-season highs up to 37°C, Italy’s weather maps are turning from red to blue as temperatures drop significantly between Tuesday, September 22, and Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Morning Temperatures Drop Below 10°C Across Multiple Regions
The cooling trend will be most pronounced during the early morning hours just after dawn. According to meteorological models, minimum temperatures will plunge below 10°C in numerous cities across the North, Center, and South starting Tuesday, September 22. Residents in cities such as Bologna, Florence, Perugia, L’Aquila, Potenza, and Cosenza can expect morning lows hovering around or dipping below the 10°C threshold.
This dramatic drop means residents will need to pull out autumn clothing for early commutes. While afternoons will retain a mild, pleasant warmth, stepping outside in a t-shirt early in the day will no longer feel normal after months of continuous high temperatures.
Afternoon Highs Normalize as Cooler Air Settles In
The temperature reduction isn’t limited to the morning hours. Maximum temperatures throughout the day will run considerably lower than what the country experienced during the late-summer stretch. By Wednesday, September 23, the ECMWF model indicates that southern regions will struggle to push much past 25°C, while northern areas will see daytime highs range between 20°C and 24°C. The only notable exception is northern Sardinia, where temperatures could still reach 30°C.
This temperature drop spans a three-day window, hitting the Centro-Nord first on Tuesday, September 22, before intensifying on Wednesday, September 23, and persisting through Thursday, September 24.
New Instability Forecasted for Central and Southern Italy
Alongside the sudden thermal drop, atmospheric conditions are shifting to bring fresh instability.
