Jacobs and Aecom Win €550m Dublin MetroLink Contract

Engineering firms Jacobs and Aecom have secured a €550 million programme delivery partner contract for Dublin’s MetroLink project, marking a critical transition from initial planning to full-scale delivery preparation according to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). The 12-year agreement represents the largest contract awarded to date for the 19-kilometer rail line running from Swords to Charlemont.

Contract Scope and Project Oversight

The €550 million agreement covers project management and oversight rather than physical construction. According to TII Chief Executive Lorcan O’Connor, the appointment by Jacobs and Aecom moves the infrastructure initiative into full-scale delivery preparation. The two engineering firms will oversee the entire construction process to ensure the rail line stays on budget, on schedule, and meets required safety and quality standards.

The MetroLink route is designed to connect Swords, Dublin Airport, the city center, and Charlemont. Transport planners expect the alignment to alter urban commuting patterns by reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions across the capital.

Property Acquisitions and Land Purchases

Preparatory work for the rail line involves extensive urban property acquisition. According to TII, spending on property purchases is expected to reach nearly €750 million by the end of the year. Significant transactions completed in recent months include UK property group Hammerson selling over a hectare of land on O’Connell Street to TII as part of an €80.7 million divestment to accommodate a planned station beneath the former Carlton cinema site.

Further south along the route, TII agreed to purchase a row of houses at Dartmouth Square in Ranelagh near the Charlemont terminus for over €30 million. An additional €22 million deal secured 40 apartments in the College Gate complex on Townsend Street, which are slated for demolition to clear space for the Tara Street station.

Project Cost Estimates and Financial Projections

While the oversight contract is fixed at €550 million, the total capital cost of the MetroLink project remains subject to revision. Public estimates from approximately four years ago pegged the overall cost at €9.5 billion, within a projected range of €7.16 billion to €12.25 billion. Updated cost estimates submitted to authorities are expected to raise that range between €14 billion and €17.5 billion, reflecting the complexities of executing a major underground rail project through an established urban center.
