A New Era for Gielinor Built on Unreal

Jagex has officially unveiled RuneScape 4, a new MMORPG built on Unreal Engine, during the RuneFest 2026 event. This news was previously advanced by Insider Gaming on September 29, 2026. While the project is currently in early development and years away from release, the studio confirmed it is designed to exist alongside current titles rather than replace them.

From Expansion to Standalone Title

The project originated as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds but transitioned into a standalone title due to its increasing scope and ambition. Jesse America, executive producer of Dragonwilds, explained during the event that the concept shifted direction after the team evaluated early prototypes and designs. Jagex stated that the game remains in its early stages and the title RS4 is currently a placeholder, as the studio’s “fourth generation” project. The studio emphasized that the game will incorporate technical lessons learned from Dragonwilds and community-led development strategies used in Old School RuneScape. The studio chose to reveal the MMO early because during 25 years, RuneScape has been shaped by its players, and they want to build with you, not just for you.

Modernizing the Franchise Engine

This announcement marks a significant departure from Jagex’s traditional proprietary engine. By moving to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, the studio aims to modernize the franchise’s technical foundation, though the company internally describes the title as typically Jagex in its structure and spirit. The studio has not yet disclosed specific technical details regarding the version of Unreal Engine in use or the platforms that will support the game. The presentation included a CGI conceptual trailer offering an initial look at the game’s tone.

Setting the Stage in the Ashenfall Region

RuneScape 4 will be set in the world of Gielinor during the Sixth Era, specifically in the Ashenfall region, a landmass first introduced in Dragonwilds. The narrative takes place years after the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. Jagex confirmed that this new MMO will not replace RuneScape or Old School RuneScape, both of which will continue to receive dedicated updates and support. The studio plans to focus the gameplay on dragon-related themes, large-scale exploration, and adventure, with more details regarding the world and player participation expected in the coming year.

RuneScape 4 Will Exist Alongside Existing Titles

Jagex has confirmed that RuneScape 4 will exist alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds, with each title maintaining its own dedicated development team and roadmap. The game is still years away from completion, and the studio has not provided a specific launch window. Furthermore, Jagex has not announced plans for account progression or character transfers from existing games. The announcement of a fourth-generation title arrives as the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary. The RuneFest Summit also introduced RuneScape Reignited, a new type of permanent character for the existing RuneScape MMO.
