Jailbroken PS5 Can Now Run Original Xbox Games via XPSemu

Jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles can now run original Xbox games following the release of XPSemu Alpha 1 by developer ZiZc3. VideoCardz.com reported that the application runs natively on modified hardware by utilizing an open-source xemu emulator port alongside QEMU’s TCG JIT for Xbox CPU emulation and the RADV Vulkan driver for graphics rendering.

Hardware Performance And CPU Bottlenecks During Emulation

Testing results published on GitHub show stark differences in how specific titles handle the translation layer. An unmodified Halo 2 runs at a stable 30 frames per second, climbing to between 36 and 50 frames per second during gameplay when utilizing community-made 60 frames per second patches. Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex also runs smoothly on the console.

Other titles hit severe hardware roadblocks due to processing limits. Forza Motorsport drops between 15 and 21 frames per second during races, while Fable: The Lost Chapters falls to 10 to 20 frames per second in heavy scenes. ZiZc3 reported that the emulated Xbox CPU thread consumes 85 to 97 percent of its assigned processing time while the graphical processing unit sits mostly idle. This unused graphical headroom allows users to raise internal resolutions up to 4x at almost no performance penalty.

Users must supply BIOS and boot ROM files

Running the emulator requires users to supply their own Xbox BIOS, MCPX boot ROM, hard disk images, and games formatted as XISO files since physical discs are unsupported. Save states are currently unavailable in the alpha build. Audio Digital Signal Processor emulation is turned off by default because it severely hurts performance.

Hackaday reported that similar homebrew projects are expanding capabilities across modern consoles that share x86 architecture. The PS5X2 project recently brought native PlayStation 2 emulation to jailbroken systems using Vulkan acceleration. Meanwhile, VideoCardz.com noted that developer BrinoBlitz is working on an Xbox 360 emulator, and another project named PP aims to bring Wine and Proton to the PlayStation 5 to run Windows applications without a secondary Linux installation.

What system software exploit allows these emulators?

What system software exploit allows these emulators to run on the PlayStation 5?

The homebrew applications run on jailbroken hardware unlocked by the Relapse exploit, which lets users bypass Sony firmware restrictions to execute unsigned code.

Can users play original Xbox game discs directly in the PlayStation 5 drive?

No, physical disc drives are not supported by the emulator, meaning players must provide digital XISO disc image files stored on the console’s internal SSD.

What are the plans for future updates to the XPSemu software?

Developer ZiZc3 has outlined a roadmap that includes adding frame generation support through an FSR 3 port to improve visual smoothness.
