Minibus Driver Leads Police on Chaotic Chase Through Central Jakarta, Injuring No One

Jakarta, Indonesia – A driver in a black Toyota Calya minibus led police on a chaotic chase through the streets of Central Jakarta on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, driving against traffic and colliding with multiple vehicles. The driver, identified as Hafiz Mahendra, 24, was eventually apprehended by authorities after a pursuit that lasted approximately an hour.

The Incident Unfolds

The incident began around 5:15 PM local time when officers attempted to stop the vehicle near the Lapangan Banteng bus stop on Jalan Gunung Sahari. According to Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, the driver refused to comply and continued south on the roadway.

“When they arrived in front of Jalan Gunung Sahari IV, the vehicle turned left onto Jalan Gunung Sahari IV and drove to Jalan Bungur Besar Raya,” Hutagalung stated. The driver then proceeded to navigate a circuitous route through the city, repeatedly driving against the flow of traffic on several streets, including Jalan Gunung Sahari V and Jalan DR Sutomo.

Witnesses reported the vehicle colliding with motorcycles and other cars during the pursuit. Video footage circulating on social media shows the Calya driving erratically and narrowly avoiding pedestrians. Police fired a warning shot into the air in an attempt to halt the vehicle, but the driver continued to evade capture.

Apprehension and Investigation

The chase concluded near the Golden Truly Busway Stop on Jalan Gunung Sahari, where the driver was finally stopped by a crowd of enraged citizens and police officers. Hafiz Mahendra, originally from Surabaya, was taken into custody, along with a female passenger whose identity has not been released.

Kompol Arry S. Utomo, Head of Traffic Police at the Jakarta Central Metro Police, confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported as a result of the incident. The vehicle sustained damage, including a broken rear window and dents to the front body.

Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the driver’s actions. Hafiz Mahendra is being questioned by police, and the investigation is ongoing.

Eyewitness Accounts

Residents described a scene of panic and frustration as the vehicle sped through the crowded streets. “The car was going the wrong way, hitting everything in its path,” said one local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “People were scared and angry.”

Ongoing Investigation

Police are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
