James Brown Completes Move to St Patrick’s Athletic
St Patrick’s Athletic have announced the signing of Irish footballer James Brown from Kilmarnock, with the 27-year-old defender joining the League of Ireland Premier Division club on a long-term contract. The move marks a return to Ireland for Brown, who has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons playing in Scotland.
Return to the League of Ireland
Brown expressed his delight at rejoining St Patrick’s Athletic, stating he had been in contact with manager Stephen Kenny for a year. “I’ve been in contact with Stephen (Kenny) on and off for a year now, so I’m really happy that it got done,” Brown said according to the club’s official website. “I made decisions to stay in the UK but I feel like now is the right time. I feel like it’s a really exciting time for the club to strive to gain them back to where they belong.”
He noted the growth of the League of Ireland since his departure in 2022, acknowledging the increasing standards within the league. “The league took off since I left so I grasp the standards are very high now. It’s a familiar league, familiar grounds, I’m really excited to get back.”
Career Overview
Prior to joining St Patrick’s Athletic, Brown had a stint with Kilmarnock, where he made 15 appearances before an injury sidelined him for the final nine games of the season as reported by Kilmarnock FC. He previously played for Ross County, featuring in 58 matches, and had a period in England with Blackburn Rovers, along with loan spells at Stockport County and Doncaster Rovers.
Brown began his career with Shelbourne, playing 33 times, and then moved to Drogheda United, where he made 75 appearances and won the 2020 League of Ireland First Division title. In 2021, he was named to the PFAI Premier Division Team of the Season while playing for Drogheda.
Kenny’s Perspective
St Patrick’s Athletic manager Stephen Kenny welcomed Brown as his sixth new recruit, praising his attributes. “I’m really pleased that James has joined the club. He brings real speed and direct play on the right flank and is an excellent crosser of the ball. I feel his energy is infectious and he is also an exceptional competitor with a really positive attitude and never gives anything less than 100%,” Kenny stated on the club’s website.
Recent Club Performance
St Patrick’s Athletic’s season has begun with two scoreless draws, against Bohemians and a loss to Shamrock Rovers, as they aim to improve their performance after failing to qualify for Europe in the 2025 season.
