His wife Kimberly Brook announced it on social media: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He faced his final days with courage, faith and grace. There is much to share about his wishes, his love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those moments will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we mourn our beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend.”
In addition to his wife Kimberly Brook, James Van Der Beek leaves behind their parents six children: Olivia (15 years old), Joshua (13 years old), Annabel (12 years old), Emilia (9 years old), Gwendolyn (7 years old) and Jeremiah (4 years old).
In November 2024, James Van Der Beek announced that he was being treated for cancer: “I received the diagnosis of colorectal cancer. I addressed the diagnosis privately and am undergoing treatment to recover.” Precisely due to treatment in September 2025, the actor was absent from the reunion with the rest of the cast of Dawson’s Creek. “I’ve been looking forward to this evening for months and months, ever since my angel Michelle Williams said she would arrange it. I can’t believe I wasn’t there. I can’t believe I can’t see my castmates, my wonderful cast, in person,” she said in a video message.
