James Trafford Admits Surprise Over Manchester City’s Donnarumma Signing
Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford has revealed he was “blindsided” by the club’s decision to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer of 2025, despite returning to the Etihad Stadium with hopes of becoming the first-choice keeper. The 23-year-aged is now considering his options as he seeks regular playing time.
Trafford’s Return and Initial Expectations
Trafford rejoined Manchester City in July 2025 in a £27 million ($37m) deal from Burnley, having previously been part of City’s academy system. He returned as a European U21 Championship winner with ambitions of establishing himself as a senior international player. Initially, manager Pep Guardiola started the season with Trafford in goal.
The Unexpected Arrival of Donnarumma
However, Guardiola surprised many – including some within his squad – by securing the services of Gianluigi Donnarumma when an opportunity arose for the Italy international to leave Paris Saint-Germain. Donnarumma was acquired for £26m ($35m) and immediately became City’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Limited Opportunities for Trafford
Since Donnarumma’s arrival, Trafford has been relegated to a backup role, featuring in only 11 appearances across all competitions, primarily in cup games. He has not seen any Premier League action since August 31st.
Trafford’s Reaction and Future Prospects
“I didn’t expect the situation to happen, but it happened, so just get on with it,” Trafford stated. “It’s happened so I operate very hard every day and see what happens, give it my best shot.” He clarified that he was never explicitly promised the No.1 spot, but anticipated being in contention for it. He as well stated, “No, it wasn’t that, but it [the plan] wasn’t what happened.”
Trafford, who turned down a move to Newcastle to rejoin City, acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his future. “I don’t know what happens next season. I just know that I’ll just take it a day at a time and try and improve.”
Potential Summer Exit
Reports suggest Trafford could leave Manchester City this summer in search of regular first-team football. The Guardian reports that the deputy goalkeeper may be allowed to depart if he expresses a desire to move.
