Jamie Dunn, Voice of Agro, Dies at 76
Jamie Dunn, the Australian radio personality and puppeteer best known as the voice of the iconic puppet Agro, has died at the age of 76. His death occurred on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in Imbil, Queensland, Australia.
A Career Spanning Decades
Born on August 12, 1949, in Brisbane, Queensland, Dunn began his entertainment career as a drummer and singer-songwriter before transitioning to television and radio. He found lasting success as the voice and operator of Agro, a character created in 1981 by BTQ-7 employee Gary Rhodes.
The Rise of Agro
Dunn was hired by Seven in 1982 as the permanent replacement for previous Agro operators, after submitting a song demo featuring an impression of the character. He rarely appeared alongside Agro on camera, maintaining the illusion of the puppet’s independent persona. Dunn first brought Agro to life on Channel Seven’s Boris’ Breakfast Club and Wombat.
Agro’s Cartoon Connection and Beyond
Agro’s popularity peaked with Agro’s Cartoon Connection, which aired from 1990 to 1997. Dunn also co-wrote and produced the television musicals Agro’s Christmas Story (1988) and A Very Agro Christmas (1989).
Radio Success
Beyond television, Dunn enjoyed a long and successful radio career, co-hosting the top-rating Brisbane breakfast show on B105 for 16 years before departing in 2005. He was Australia’s longest-serving breakfast radio host.
Tributes from Colleagues
Fellow radio personalities have shared their memories of Dunn. Jill Ray-Black, his co-host on Cartoon Connection, described him as unforgettable. Ranger Stacey, a colleague on television, praised his brilliance, humor and kindness. Robin Bailey, who worked with Dunn on B105 for 10 years, highlighted his storytelling ability and influence. Gary Hardgrave, a 4BC radio presenter and longtime friend, remembered Dunn as a true entertainer.
A Brisbane Icon
Brisbane’s mayor, Adrian Schrinner, paid tribute to Dunn as a “proud Brisbane talent” whose wit brought joy to generations of children.
Future Plans
In December 2025, Dunn revealed he was in discussions with Channel 7 about a potential one-hour special of Agro Up Late in 2026.
