Jane Fonda Questions Streisand’s Redford Tribute at Oscars

Jane Fonda expressed playful surprise that Barbra Streisand delivered the tribute to Robert Redford at the 98th Academy Awards, suggesting her own longer working relationship with the late actor warranted the honor. The exchange occurred at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party following Sunday night’s ceremony.

Fonda’s Remarks

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Fonda quipped, “I want to know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford? She only made one movie with him; I made four… I have more to say.”

Streisand’s Tribute

Streisand honored Redford during the In Memoriam segment of the 2026 Oscars, performing a portion of “The Way We Were,” the theme song from their 1973 film together. She reflected on Redford’s character, stating, “Bob had real backbone on and off the screen,” and praised his advocacy for freedom of the press, environmental protection, and emerging voices in the film industry through his Sundance Institute.

A History of Collaboration

Fonda and Redford collaborated on four films: The Chase (1966), Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Electric Horseman (1979), and Our Souls at Night (2017). Following Redford’s death in September 2025 at the age of 89, Fonda shared her grief on Instagram, calling him a “beautiful person” and a champion of American ideals.

Fonda also admitted to having been in love with Redford, describing him as “the most gorgeous human being and such great values.”

Streisand’s Recollections

Streisand recalled Redford’s initial hesitation about taking on the role in The Way We Were and highlighted his thoughtfulness and boldness. She shared that during their last conversation, they both expressed their love for one another.
