Opinion polls show the LDP, which has ruled almost continuously for seven decades, will win more than the 233 seats needed to win a majority in the 465-seat lower house of parliament.

With some caution given undecided voters and wintry weather, the LDP and its coalition partner, the conservative Innovation Party (“Ishin”), are projected to win 310 seats, securing a two-thirds majority.

The ruling coalition currently has a majority in the lower house of parliament, but is in a minority in the upper house.

Takaichi became Japan’s first female prime minister in October. In mid-January, she called early parliamentary elections, hoping to use the large public support for her government to gain a stronger mandate.
