Japan Economy Slipping to Sixth Place in 2027

Japan’s nominal gross domestic product is forecast to slip to sixth place in 2027 behind the United Kingdom and India for the first time. The International Monetary Fund released its biannual World Economic Outlook report on Tuesday, outlining shifting economic rankings across major nations.

IMF Projections Show India and UK Surpassing Japan

According to the IMF report, Japan’s GDP ranks fourth this year at $4.34 trillion. The United Kingdom follows closely at $4.27 trillion, while India stands at $4.06 trillion. By 2027, India’s economy is projected to reach $4.52 trillion to take fourth place. The U.K. will follow in fifth place at $4.49 trillion, and Japan will drop to sixth at $4.47 trillion.

Previous forecasts suggested the U.K. would overtake Japan in 2029, but analysts have brought that timeline forward. Conversely, earlier projections anticipated India would surpass Japan by 2025, though that shift did not materialize on that schedule.

Weak Yen and Aging Population Drive Economic Pressures

Japan maintained its position as the world’s third-largest economy for about a decade until Germany overtook it in 2023. A tumultuous global economy contributes to a darkening outlook. The weakness of the yen against the dollar shrinks the country’s purchasing power, while rising costs place heavy pressure on households. An aging population and low economic growth further complicate the country’s financial future.

Despite these long-term pressures, Japan’s GDP in the second quarter outperformed expectations. Government support helped mitigate the impact of higher energy prices.

Global Inflation and Artificial Intelligence Investment Pressures

Titled “Resilience Under Strain, Urgent Choices,” the October World Economic Outlook predicts continued global challenges. Global inflation is expected to reach 4.7% in 2026, driven by higher energy and food prices. While the IMF projects 3.1% global economic growth for 2026 and 3.4% for 2027, Deniz Igan, division chief of the IMF’s Research Department, notes that the distribution will be uneven. A growing divide driven by artificial intelligence investment and favorable terms of trade will significantly impact individual nations. Igan warns that artificial intelligence also poses risks if expectations surrounding its impact prove overly optimistic.
