Colorado Buffaloes Football Faces Critical Coaching Decisions Amid Struggles
The Colorado Buffaloes prepare to host No. 11 Utah at Folsom Field under mounting scrutiny regarding the future of head coach Deion Sanders, The Denver Post reported. Sanders holds a record of five wins and 12 losses over the past 15 months, operating through three different offensive play-callers and two defensive coordinators during that span.
Athletic director Fernando Lovo faces mounting questions about the direction of the program as the team enters a difficult stretch of the Big 12 schedule. Sanders carries a five-year, $54-million contract with three and a half seasons remaining. Dismissing Sanders without cause would require the university to pay 75 percent of the remaining base salary, a financial obligation estimated at roughly $26 million if executed in early December.
The Rising Profile of Jason Eck at New Mexico
Speculation surrounds New Mexico head coach Jason Eck as a potential target for Power 4 programs seeking leadership changes. Eck led New Mexico to a 9-4 record last season and a 4-1 start this year, which included a 14-6 defeat at Oklahoma on Sept. 19. His buyout sits at $4 million if triggered before New Year’s 2027, dropping to $2 million in 2027 and $750,000 in 2028.
During his tenure at Idaho from 2022 to 2024, Eck compiled a 26-13 record, turning around a program that had managed just two winning seasons over the prior 22 years.
Upcoming Big 12 Schedule and Financial Pressures at Folsom Field
Colorado enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record and an 0-2 mark in Big 12 play. Following the matchup against Utah, the Buffaloes host Kansas State on Oct. 31, face No. 20 Houston on Nov. 13, and close the home schedule against UCF on Nov. 28.
The athletic department reportedly operated at a loss of roughly $27 million during the fiscal year ending in June, aided by $41.78 million in direct institutional support from the university during the 2024-25 fiscal year, according to data compiled by the office of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell.
