Kansas Swim & dive Sweeps Big 12 Weekly Awards

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas swim and dive team achieved a remarkable sweep of the Big 12 weekly awards on December 11, 2023, with junior Shiyun Lai named Big 12 Women’s Diver of the Week, sophomore Gabi Dyer selected as Big 12 Women’s swimmer of the Week, and freshman Sammy Cummins earning Women’s Newcomer of the Week honors.

“We had a solid meet against Houston and our three honorees definitely stood out,” said Kansas head coach Clark Campbell. “It was a gritty performance by the entire team and we’re looking forward to keeping the momentum going this weekend.”

Dominating Performance

This marks the second time in the 2023-24 season that Kansas athletes have claimed all three of the Big 12 women’s swim and dive weekly categories. Lai secured her third Big 12 diving award of the season and her eleventh career Big 12 honour. Dyer received her first-ever Big 12 recognition following her performance against Houston, and Cummins earned her second Newcomer of the Week award after achieving a personal best time against the Cougars.

Lai’s Diving Excellence

For the third time this season at Robinson Pool, Lai swept both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving competitions. She scored 369.23 points on the 3-meter and 334.43 points on the 1-meter.

Dyer’s Freestyle Victories

Dyer continued her impressive season with first-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.06) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.00), winning by a margin of over three seconds in the latter event.

Cummins’ Rising Star Performance

Cummins was one of three jayhawks to set a new career-best time of 4:24.03 in the 400-yard Individual Medley (IM) to finish second. She also secured a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:00.57.

Looking Ahead

The Jayhawks will conclude thier fall schedule with a dual meet against Rockhurst at Robinson Natatorium on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 1 p.m. CT.
