Wynton Marsalis’s ‘Democracy Suite’ Comes to Stony Brook Southampton
The Jazz Loft @ Southampton Concert Series continues its 2026 season on Thursday, March 26, with a performance of Wynton Marsalis’s Democracy Suite. Freedom & Beyond, as the concert is titled, will be performed by trumpeter Tom Manuel and his septet at the Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton.
Composed during the height of the pandemic, Democracy Suite is a reflective work exploring themes of freedom, responsibility, and collective action in modern America. Blending swing, lyrical melodies, and improvisation, the suite draws on jazz’s history as a voice for democracy and social consciousness. Marsalis has described the work as inspired by “citizens who have set their lives on the line… working through this pandemic,” honoring those who served during a time of uncertainty Stony Brook News.
