Jean-Pierre Moreau, Pioneer of Le Mans Endurance Racing, Dies at 85
Jean-Pierre Moreau, the former sporting director of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) from 1970 to 2000, has died at the age of 85. He is best known for creating the 24 Hours of Le Mans for motorcycles in 1978 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans for trucks in 1981.
Moreau’s contributions were instrumental in the development of the iconic endurance race and the Circuit de la Sarthe. He similarly oversaw the construction of the two chicanes on the Hunaudières straight in 1990, a project undertaken to reduce the speeds of cars that were reaching 400 km/h on that section of the track, following pressure from the FIA and local authorities.
A Lasting Legacy
“He was monsieur 24 Heures du Mans for 30 years. His legacy is considerable,” said Hervé Guyomard, a motorsports historian and former director of the 24 Hours of Le Mans museum. “An engineer by training, he was highly appreciated and respected by the teams and within the governing bodies. He skillfully managed complex issues, such as those surrounding the much-criticized chicanes. Passionate and dedicated, the 24 Hours of Le Mans would not be what it is today without him.”
Bruno Vandestick, whom Moreau recruited as the race announcer for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1993, described him as a “mentor and a hero who left his mark on the event.”
The Trophée des 24 Heures du Mans
Moreau also initiated the creation of the Trophée des 24 Heures du Mans in 1993. The trophy is awarded annually, but is permanently retained by any manufacturer that wins the race three consecutive times. Audi and Porsche are recent examples of teams to achieve this feat, winning three years in a row in recent history.
In 2013, for the 90th anniversary of the race, the ACO replaced the central element of the trophy with a representation of the original Rudge-Withworth Cup, aiming to strengthen the historical connection between the race and its symbolic prize.
