Detroit Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg has removed his name from consideration for the Detroit Red Wings’ vacant head of hockey operations position, according to a September 2026 report. Greenberg communicated the decision through a Tigers spokesperson, opting to remain with the baseball club as it continues its current season under the Ilitch Sports + Entertainment umbrella.

The Decision to Stay With the Tigers

Greenberg informed the Red Wings of his choice on a Monday, stating through a spokesperson that he has tremendous respect and admiration for the organization and felt honored to be considered. However, he emphasized his full commitment to the Tigers and the ongoing project built by baseball operations president Scott Harris. Greenberg joined the Tigers in September 2023 after Harris hired him away from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Greenberg initially notified Tigers beat writers of his decision via a group text. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman subsequently confirmed the withdrawal on social media. The shared ownership between the two franchises under the Ilitch family sparked early speculation regarding Greenberg’s potential dual candidacy or crossover into the hockey front office.

Background and Red Wings Leadership Search

Greenberg, 40, possesses a front office background spanning both baseball and hockey. Before serving as general manager for the Tigers, he spent time as assistant general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks starting in April 2022. Prior to his foray into the NHL, Greenberg worked extensively in Major League Baseball, including executive roles in the Chicago Cubs front office under Theo Epstein, rising to assistant general manager before moving to hockey operations.

The Red Wings’ executive search follows a transition announced on July 15, when former general manager Steve Yzerman shifted to a senior adviser role for CEO Chris Ilitch. As the Red Wings prepare to open training camp on September 17 and begin their regular season on October 2 against the New York Rangers, the search for a new head of hockey operations continues. Following Greenberg’s withdrawal, Detroit Hockey Now reports that other candidates, such as Florida Panthers assistant general manager Brett Peterson, remain subjects of league speculation.
