Jefferson City Man Charged After Shooting Involving Police

Jefferson City, MO – A 40-year-classic man, Joey T. Hampton, has been charged with five felonies following an incident on Thursday that resulted in him being shot by Jefferson City Police Department (JCPD) officers. The charges were filed on Friday, February 27, 2026, by Cole County prosecutors, according to reports from ABC17 News and KRCG TV.

Details of the Incident

The incident began when two JCPD officers attempted to make contact with Hampton, who they believed was involved in the sale and employ of illegal drugs, possessed a stolen handgun, and had previously threatened someone with a firearm. KRCG TV reports that officers first observed Hampton riding an electric scooter near the intersection of West Atchison and Broadway streets.

According to court documents, Hampton fled the scene on the scooter and hid behind a building. The situation escalated when Hampton allegedly pointed a gun at the officers and fired, striking a JCPD patrol car driven by one of the officers. Officers then returned fire, hitting Hampton.

• Unlawful Possession Of A Firearm
• Discharge/Shoot Firearm At Motor Vehicle
• Two counts of First Degree Assault – Serious Physical Injury Or Special Victim

Investigation and Current Status

Hampton received medical treatment for his injuries. As of Friday, February 27, 2026, he was not listed on the Cole County Jail’s online roster, ABC17 News reported. The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s division of drug and crime control is investigating the shooting. No officers were injured during the exchange.

Previous Incident

According to Newstribune, in February 2020, Joey Hampton, then 34, was arrested following a foot pursuit with authorities after officers attempted a traffic stop in the 1800 block of Route C.
