Jennifer Coolidge Once Lied on Her Resume to Land a ‘Seinfeld’ Role

Jennifer Coolidge, a comedic mainstay in Hollywood since the mid-1990s, is currently enjoying a career renaissance thanks to her Emmy-winning role on The White Lotus. However, the actress’s initial break into television involved a bit of creative embellishment on her resume.

The ‘Seinfeld’ Audition

Coolidge revealed in a recent oral history feature by GQ that she padded her resume to secure the role of Jodi, “The Masseuse,” in the Season 5 episode of Seinfeld. This marked her very first television gig.

“It was a weird day,” Coolidge recalled. “I booked Seinfeld the same day that I booked this very short-lived series called She TV, which was an all-women sketch show on ABC. I didn’t really have any jobs before that. I only had lies on my resume. I’d gone to a school called American Academy of Dramatic Arts up in Pasadena, and I’d just named all these shows and all these different theaters at the school as if they played there. You have to do that if you have a blank resume, until you start getting jobs. Then you can slowly erase the lies. I’d love to gain my hands on that resume now.”

From ‘Seinfeld’ to Stardom

She TV, an all-women sketch show, lasted only one season and six episodes. Coolidge’s character on Seinfeld, Jodi, frustrated Jerry with her refusal to provide a professional massage and is best remembered for the line, “I don’t submit to forcible massage.”

The 1993 Seinfeld episode allowed Coolidge to remove one fabrication from her resume. She subsequently landed roles in films like Plump Fiction and briefly worked on a short-lived Saturday Night Live competitor, Saturday Night Special, before achieving wider recognition.

Today, Coolidge is a celebrated Hollywood figure, with recent roles including Vice Principal Marlene in A Minecraft Movie (available to stream on HBO Max as of March 15, 2026). Seinfeld is available for streaming on Netflix.
