All eyes are on Jessie Holmes as he nears the finish line of the 2026 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, poised to potentially become the first musher to win consecutive championships since Lance Mackey in 2008. Holmes successfully navigated the challenging Blow Hole and passed the Nome Kennel Club Safety Cabin without seeking shelter, demonstrating his and his team’s strength as he approaches Safety checkpoint.
A Bid for Iditarod History
Holmes is aiming to join an exclusive club of Iditarod champions – Susan Butcher and Lance Mackey – who have both achieved back-to-back victories. Butcher accomplished this feat in 1986 and 1987, adding a third win in 1988. Mackey followed with consecutive wins in 2007 and 2008, extending his streak with further victories in 2009 and 2010.[1]

Holmes reached the White Mountain checkpoint first, earning the Northrim Bank Achieve More Award, which includes a $2,500 check and a trophy displayed at Iditarod headquarters.[3] He departed White Mountain after completing a mandatory eight-hour rest, beginning the final 77-mile stretch to Nome. His 2025 run from White Mountain to Nome took 9 hours and 59 minutes, suggesting a potential finish time between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM on Wednesday.[1]

As Holmes approaches Nome, he will receive his bib and assistance putting it on over his parka. The final leg involves climbing Cape Nome before reaching Front Street. Race officials anticipate a celebratory finish with a fire siren and a police escort to the burled arch.[1]
