Jets Firm on Keeping Breece Hall, Franchise Tag Likely if No Deal Reached

New York Jets running back Breece Hall is poised to grow a free agent for the first time, but the organization is resolute in its intention to retain the star ballcarrier. Jets General Manager Darren Mougey has made it clear that the team will utilize either the franchise tag or transition tag if a long-term contract extension cannot be agreed upon before the March 3 deadline.

Jets Prioritize Hall’s Retention

Despite considering trade opportunities last season, the Jets have consistently expressed a desire to retain Hall within the organization. Mougey reiterated this commitment at the 2026 NFL Combine, stating, “Ideally we’d find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around. I believe I’ve said that for the last year since I’ve got here. Breece is a good player. Want to find a way to keep him around. We’ve been going through that process and are still doing so.”

Tag Options and Financial Implications

With the deadline for applying a tag looming on March 3, the Jets face a decision between the franchise tag, projected at $14.5 million and the transition tag, estimated at $11.7 million . The franchise tag offers stronger protections, guaranteeing Hall’s continued presence with the team unless a trade is negotiated. The transition tag allows Hall to explore offers from other teams, with the Jets having the right to match any offer.

Mutual Interest in a Long-Term Deal

Mougey indicated a belief that Hall is also interested in remaining with the Jets, stating, “I do get the sense that Breece wants to be here. We’ve had good conversations throughout the season, after the season. So just finding a way to do that.” This suggests a potential path towards a long-term agreement before the tag deadline.

Hall’s Value to the Jets

Despite the team’s struggles in recent seasons, Hall has consistently performed as a key offensive weapon. He has played in all but two games since being drafted in 2022, accumulating at least 876 rushing yards and four touchdowns each season. He also remains a productive receiving back, though his numbers in that area dipped slightly in the most recent season, recording 36 catches for 350 yards and one touchdown.

Potential Scenarios

The most likely scenario for Hall to land on another roster in 2026 would involve the Jets applying the transition tag, prompting another team to extend an offer that New York ultimately declines to match. But, the Jets appear determined to avoid this outcome and retain their star running back.
