Jimmy White’s Assist Propels Ronnie O’Sullivan to Players Championship Jackpot

The Players Championship, currently underway in Telford, holds a special place in the career of snooker legend Jimmy White. While the tournament’s format has evolved since his victory, White’s 2004 win played a pivotal role in securing a £50,000 bonus for his close friend, Ronnie O’Sullivan.

A Tournament Transformed

At 63 years ancient, Jimmy White continues to compete on the professional snooker circuit, often regarded as the ‘greatest player never to have won the World Championship’. Despite this, his achievements are numerous, including victories at the Masters and UK Championship, and a place among the select group of players with ten or more ranking event titles.

White’s Players Championship triumph in 2004, held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, occurred during a period of change for the sport, as tobacco sponsorship was coming to an complete. The event offered a first prize of £82,500 and was televised by Sky Sports.

The LG Electronics Tour and a £50,000 Bonus

The 2004 Players Championship was the final event of the LG Electronics Tour, a series comprising seven tournaments: the LG Cup, British Open, UK Championship, Welsh Open, European Open, Irish Masters, and the Players Championship itself. The tour featured a ranking list, with points awarded for performance in each event.

A £50,000 bonus was awarded to the player who accumulated the most points across the seven LG Electronics Tour events. Heading into the Players Championship, seven players remained in contention for the bonus.

A Dramatic Finish

Ronnie O’Sullivan led the standings going into the final event but was eliminated in the quarter-finals. However, the results of other contenders positioned Jimmy White and Paul Hunter for a final showdown. Hunter defeated O’Sullivan earlier in the tournament.

Hunter knew that winning the final would result in a tie with O’Sullivan in the overall standings, but he would claim the £50,000 bonus on countback. White, enjoying a resurgent season with semi-final appearances at the UK Championship and Masters, and a final appearance at the European Open, faced Hunter in the title match.

White battled back from 5-3 down against Peter Ebdon in the semi-finals to secure his place in the final, also guaranteeing his top 16 status for the following season.

White’s Victory, O’Sullivan’s Reward

The final was closely contested, with the players tied at 4-4 after the first session. Hunter took the lead in the evening session, but White responded with a four-frame streak, moving to 8-5 ahead. Hunter narrowed the gap to 8-7, but White ultimately prevailed, winning 10-8 to claim his first ranking title in over eleven years.

Crucially, White’s victory secured the £50,000 bonus for Ronnie O’Sullivan, a testament to their friendship and sportsmanship.

Sadly, Paul Hunter passed away in 2006 at the age of 27, making this his last appearance in a professional event final. Source
