Actors Joe Morton and Eilis Cahill Perform “Brutal Imagination” at Oak Park and River Forest High School Event

On April 16, 2026, Emmy-award winning actor Joe Morton and actress Eilis Cahill presented a reading from Brutal Imagination, a book by award-winning poet Cornelius Eady, at Oak Park and River Forest High School. The performance was part of a two-day student-led event focused on the intersection of art and justice, which included a workshop and a live performance followed by a Q&A panel.

The reading was based on Eady’s poem, which draws from the 1994 true story of Susan Smith, a woman who falsely accused a Black man of murdering her children when she was responsible for their deaths. The poem was adapted into a play and previously performed off-Broadway as a one-night benefit for the Innocence Project, an organization for which Joe Morton serves as an ambassador.

Following the performance, a panel discussion featured Charles Johnson and Larod Styles, two individuals who were wrongfully convicted as teenagers in a 1995 double murder case and later exonerated in 2024 as part of the Marquette Park Four. They received a $50 million settlement. Johnson stated that the play resonated with his personal experience, saying, “That play was powerful because it kind of touched on my situation, my actual case,” and added that he found it enlightening.

Cornelius Eady attended both days of the event. The initiative was organized by student leaders at Oak Park and River Forest High School to deepen peer understanding of systemic and racial injustice through artistic expression.

The event was covered by Cam’ron Hardy of the Pioneer Press, who reported on the performance and its significance in fostering dialogue about hidden disabilities, healthcare access, and community integration in Oak Park.
