John Egan’s Resilience: From Achilles Rupture to Ireland’s Play-Off Hope
For two years, John Egan was out of sight and out of mind for the Republic of Ireland national team. However, the Hull City centre-back has battled back from a serious Achilles injury to reclaim his place in the squad, playing a vital role as Ireland prepares for their crucial World Cup play-off semi-final against Czechia.
Injury and Road to Recovery
In September 2023, while playing for Sheffield United in the Premier League against West Ham, Egan suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. This injury led to his release from Sheffield United at the end of his contract. After a period without a club, Burnley took a chance on him in October 2024, and he subsequently joined Hull City in early 2025. He has since made 49 appearances for the Tigers, revitalizing his career.
Return to the International Stage
Egan’s perseverance paid off when he received a call-up from Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson in October 2024. His last appearance for Ireland prior to this had been against the Netherlands in September 2023. He made his return in a 1-0 defeat to Portugal in October 2024.
Impact Beyond the Pitch
Though not always a starter, Egan has become a key figure in the Ireland dressing room. Captain Nathan Collins and Séamus Coleman have praised Egan for his positive influence and ability to lift spirits within the team. He played a part in Ireland’s successful run of three consecutive wins that secured their World Cup play-off spot, culminating in a 3-2 victory over Hungary, sealed by a hat-trick from Troy Parrott.
Current Form and Future Prospects
Egan has been a consistent performer for Hull City, starting 33 of their 39 Championship games, leading to a contract extension that will keep him with the club until the summer of 2027. He remains hopeful of earning a starting position in Ireland’s back five for the play-off semi-final against Czechia.
“It was a long time out of the fold, having been in the squad regularly,” Egan said. “I got a big injury and had to function hard to get back on the pitch at club level and then try to perform to a standard where I’d be called upon with Ireland given that I think everyone knows how much playing for Ireland means to me.”
