A Life Dedicated to Dentistry and Service

John Giles Foushee, Jr., a longtime Charlotte dentist and United States Air Force veteran, died on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the age of 75. A fixture in his hometown’s medical community, Foushee transitioned from military service to a decades-long private practice, leaving behind a legacy of clinical dedication.

From Myers Park to the Air Force

Born in Charlotte on March 29, 1951, to John Giles Foushee, Sr. and Mildred Leonard Foushee, he was a product of the local school system, graduating from Myers Park High School. His path to medicine began at Davidson College, followed by his dental degree from The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. It was during these academic years that he joined the United States Air Force Senior Dental program. Upon his commissioning as a Captain, he was stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base, serving as the base flight dentist until 1980.

Building a Charlotte Practice

Foushee returned to Charlotte in 1980 to establish his own practice, where he remained until his retirement in 2017. Throughout his career, he maintained active memberships with the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, and the Charlotte Dental Society. Beyond the office, he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed tennis, fishing, camping, and hiking. He was a loyal supporter of the Davidson Wildcats and the UNC Tarheels, and in his final years, he focused his energy on constructing a large-scale model train diorama.

Surviving Relatives Mourn the Late Foushee

Foushee leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Ruth Buker Foushee. He is also survived by his two sons, John Giles Foushee III and his spouse, Junru Xu, and Dr. Madison Steele Foushee. His extended family includes three brothers and their spouses: David L. and Suzanne Foushee of Grand Junction, Colorado; Drs. R. Holt and Deborah Foushee of Charlotte; and James A. Foushee of Stanley, North Carolina. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Kenneth C. and Lori Buker of Land O' Lakes, Florida, and Dwight and Elizabeth Sparks of Advance, North Carolina.

Memorial Arrangements

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Monday, November 16, 2026, at the Francis Chapel in Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte. The church will provide a livestream of the service for those unable to attend in person. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the church immediately following the ceremony. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to Conserving Carolina or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Foushee’s passing marks the end of a career that spanned nearly four decades of private dentistry in the Charlotte area.
