John Herdman, the coach who dramatically improved the Canadian men’s national team and led them to the 2022 World Cup, has accepted a new challenge. He has been appointed as the head coach of the Indonesian men’s national team, signing a four-year contract.

Herdman, age 50, inherits an Indonesian team currently ranked 122nd in the world. His predecessor, Dutch football legend Patrick Kluivert, departed in mid-October after Indonesia narrowly missed qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The team suffered defeats against Iraq (ranked 58th) and Saudi Arabia (ranked 60th) during the fourth round of regional qualifying.

“It was about finding the right project, one that you can feel the passion and intensity of the fans,” Herdman explained. He had been seeking a new role as resigning as Toronto FC coach in November 2024.
