Apple executive John Ternus is set to succeed Tim Cook as Chief Executive Officer on September 1, 2026, according to an announcement. Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman of the board following a unanimous decision by Apple’s board of directors, concluding a 15-year tenure that saw the company’s market capitalization climb to $4 trillion.

John Ternus’s Background and Hardware Leadership

Unlike his predecessor, who came to the company with a background in operations and supply chain management, incoming CEO John Ternus brings a mechanical engineering background to the top post. Ternus graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and joined Apple’s product design team in 2001. He rose through the ranks to become vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 before joining Cook’s inner circle as a senior vice president in 2021.

During his tenure leading hardware engineering, Ternus managed the transition of Mac computers to Apple Silicon, which revitalized the company’s computer lineup. Ternus also led the development of the AirPods, iPad, and the iPhone 17 line, including the iPhone Air. Tim Cook characterized his successor to as a leader possessing an “engineer’s mind and an innovator’s soul.”

Tim Cook’s Financial and Operational Legacy

When Tim Cook steps down on September 1, 2026, he will leave behind a period of unprecedented financial expansion. Apple’s market capitalization surged by 1,000 percent under Cook’s leadership from 2011 to 2026, moving from $350 billion to $4 trillion. Cook drove the explosive growth of Apple’s services sector—including iCloud, Apple Pay, and Apple Music—which now generates over $100 billion annually, alongside launching new product categories like the Apple Watch and Vision Pro.

While relinquishing the CEO title, Cook will remain involved in international strategy and government relations in his new capacity as executive chairman. The executive transition has been described by the board as meticulous and long-term planned.

Strategic Priorities Facing the New CEO

As Ternus prepares to take the helm of a saturated tech market, his stated priorities center on sustainability, hardware repairability, and health technology integration. Ternus has driven initiatives to utilize recycled aluminum and 3D-printed titanium to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. Under his direction, the company has also begun adjusting its approach to device durability and repairability.

Furthermore, Ternus has overseen the expansion of hardware into health-focused tools, exemplified by the evolution of AirPods into over-the-counter hearing aids. Starting in September 2026, Ternus will take full control of corporate operations with the stated goal of continuing to build products that alter how users interact with the world.
