An industrial fire and explosion at Daewon Industrial in Seongnam-myeon, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan-si, South Korea, resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries on November 28. According to reports from Yonhap News Agency, police, fire authorities, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and the National Forensic Service launched a joint inspection on October 31 following an interagency briefing to determine the precise ignition point and root cause of the disaster.
Investigation Focus and Evidence Recovery
Investigators are prioritizing whether an explosion triggered the fire or if a blaze preceded the blast. According to Yonhap News Agency, police secured a statement indicating a witness saw flames erupting on the fifth floor of the factory building. Authorities also recovered statements noting that several employees remained on-site immediately prior to the accident to inspect valves, and investigators have secured internal closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the facility.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:44 a.m. on November 28 at the paint raw material production plant. The blast and subsequent fire killed three workers, while another employee suffered second-degree burns across their body and was transferred to a hospital. A firefighter responding to the scene also sustained injuries from falling debris.
Safety Compliance and Structural Checks
The facility has a history of repeated fire incidents. According to Yonhap News Agency, four fires occurred at the plant over a four-year span prior to this event, including an oil boiler fire in 2022, an oil tank fire in 2023, and a piping fire last year.
Because of this recurring pattern, investigators are examining whether management implemented adequate safety measures ahead of the disaster. Authorities are also checking for unauthorized extensions by comparing building registry floor counts against actual structural heights. Additionally, the joint inspection team is verifying whether emergency broadcast systems functioned properly and reviewing the installation and maintenance status of escape stairs and emergency exits.
