Details of the Incident
Officers responded to a call at approximately 3:45 p.m. Regarding a man assaulting an animal at the grocery store located in the 600 block of Collins Street [1]. Upon arrival, they found Francisco Arreola, 39, holding a tan, black, and white rooster secured with a rope leash tied to its leg.
The rooster exhibited visible injuries, including cuts and bleeding on its head and blood on its feathers [1]. Witnesses reported seeing Arreola strike the rooster multiple times while attempting to place it into a shopping cart [2].
Conflicting Statements and Charges
Arreola initially claimed the rooster was his pet and he was training it to fight. He later stated he was attempting to train the animal for self-defense [1]. However, police noted that Arreola initially provided a false identity and appeared intoxicated [3].
He has been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty, misdemeanor cruelty to animals, an animals in entertainment violation, and obstructing justice [2]. Arreola also had two outstanding arrest warrants from Kane County [1].
