‘Handcuffed’: Channel 4’s Daring Latest Reality Indicate Inspired by ‘Midnight Run’

Channel 4 is set to launch a new reality series, Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing, on Monday, a format directly inspired by the 1987 action comedy Midnight Run starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. The show, hosted by Jonathan Ross, pairs strangers with drastically different viewpoints and physically handcuffs them together for 24/7 interaction, competing for a £100,000 prize.

The ‘Midnight Run’ Connection

David Glover, boss of 72 Films, the production company behind Handcuffed, revealed the show’s origins in the classic film. “At first they hate each other but by the end of the film they’ve got past their differences,” Glover told Deadline. “By the end, they almost love each other. That kind of comedy is often done with just two people. So I started talking to Channel 4 about divided Britain and a divided society, and how we could capture that in an interesting way.”

How ‘Handcuffed’ Works

Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing deliberately matches contestants with opposing beliefs, creating inherent conflict and potential for growth. Pairs will navigate daily life – eating, sleeping, and even arguing over bathroom access – while physically connected. The last pair remaining wins the £100,000 jackpot. The series is already being positioned as a potential rival to shows like The Traitors, known for its social experiment and dramatic twists.

The initial pairings promise a clash of personalities and ideologies. Contestants include a body positive feminist paired with a “gym bro” accused of toxic masculinity, and a wealthy gentleman with over 50 cars chained to a Londoner working multiple jobs.
