University of Illinois Extension to Host 28th Annual Joys of Gardening Program

Freeport, Ill. – The University of Illinois Extension and the U of I Extension Master Gardeners will host the 28th annual Joys of Gardening program on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Highland Community College Student Conference Center, located at 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Freeport. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the program commencing at 8:25 a.m.

Keynote Presentation: Gardening for Hummingbirds

This year’s keynote speakers, Kathi and Michael Rock, will present “Gardening for Hummingbirds.” The presentation will focus on creating a backyard sanctuary for these birds, utilizing perennial and annual plants, wildflowers, shrubs, trees, and hummingbird feeders. Topics will include Ruby-throated hummingbird identification, habitat preferences, migration patterns, nesting habits, feeding behaviors, the importance of water features, and selecting the best feeders and plants for attracting hummingbirds.

Breakout Sessions: Diverse Gardening Topics

Following the keynote, attendees can choose from two breakout sessions, each offering a variety of garden-related classes.

Session 1 Classes

  • Salvias: Hidden Treasures for your Pollinator Garden: Explore the diverse world of salvias and their benefits for pollinators.
  • Growing Forward: What’s New for 2026: Discover the latest trends and innovations in gardening for the upcoming year.
  • Seed Starting for Success: Pocket-Friendly and Eco-Smart Methods: Learn cost-effective and environmentally friendly techniques for starting seeds.

Session 2 Classes

  • Native Plant Solutions for Challenging Landscape Situations: Find native plant options for difficult areas in your garden.
  • Tree and Shrub Establishment: Learn best practices for successfully planting and establishing trees, and shrubs.
  • Your Toolbox for a Showcase Landscape: Discover essential tools and techniques for creating a beautiful and well-maintained landscape.

Registration Information
