The smell of waffles, a visit from Santa Claus and many exciting fights – this was what characterized the traditional Christmas tournament of the Döbelner SC Judo department on the third weekend in advent. A total of around 120 judoka, from the vrey young ones in the U7 to the men and women, gathered in the gym in Döbeln-nord.
The KJSC from Döbeln and five girls from Judokan Schkeuditz, who strengthened the women’s league this year, also visited. The tournament once again offered the possibility to end the competition year with families and to thank those without whom such training and competition would not be possible: the parents, trainers, referees.
Get a taste of competitive air

In addition to exciting competitions, which primarily served as a way for the little ones to get a taste of competitive air and for the older ones as an internal test of strength, numerous awards where also presented. There was full female power in the club’s internal ranking for the most successful judoka in the competition: Ida Bäßler from the U9 took third place (already a hope for the women’s team), Anna Lorenz was able to secure second place and Lucy Joelle Wetzig took first place.
In addition, the judoka were honored who fought their way through the qualification route to the Central German or even German championships. The women’s team also took advantage of the opportunity to present the new suits for the coming seasons. They were supported in the purchase by a fundraising campaign thanks to numerous contributions from fans and the savings bank.
Honor for Nico Schertler
Nico Schertler received a very special honor because the Christmas and family atmosphere of the Christmas tournament was used to honor the deputy department head. The honorary council of the Judo Association of Saxony (JVS) had approved the club’s application to award nico the third Dan (third master degree) for his work. A companion for many years and vice president of the JVS, René Andreis, did not want to miss the presentation and traveled to Döbeln especially for it.
Nico Schertler wasn’t just presented with the certificate with a bouquet of flowers, a little bit from the application was also quoted – and the list couldn’t stop. Nico Schertler started judo in 2001 and has been actively involved in the club ever since, first with a sports assistantship (2006), then a trainer C license (2009) and of course also looking after children’s training groups.
255 competitions accumulated
At the same time, he acquired his first referee license in 2007 and has continued to climb the license levels ever since. in 2018, he became the first Döbelner to successfully complete the Federal B referee test, which entitles him to referee group championships and Bundesliga appearances. He has now accumulated 255 competitions in his Kari pass, but he is not resting on his laurels and continues to collect diligently – this year alone there are over 30 competitions.
As if the 255 competitions weren’t enough, he has been in charge of the club’s jury for ten years and, since the beginning of 2023, he has also officially held dual leadership in the entire chemnitz sports district. There he looks after the young talent and ensures reliable protection of the DSC and district competitions.

Nico Schertler not only supports on the mat, he also does it in the background: The DSC homepage has existed for 20 years – developed by him when he was still a student.It is indeed constantly being worked on to ensure it is always kept up to date. In doing so, he supports the club and the trainers, because even before the German Judo Federation (DJB) even thought of digital membership management, the DSC already had a functioning one.
