Saumur Commemorates Bastille Day with Military Parade and EBRC Jaguar Baptism

The city of Saumur will host its annual Bastille Day celebrations on July 14, featuring a military parade on Avenue Foch and the official baptism of an Engin Blindé de Reconnaissance et de Combat (EBRC) Jaguar. This ceremony honors active-duty military, reservists, and civilians who support French national security, while emphasizing the historical ties between the city and the French cavalry.

Parade Schedule and Military Honors

The official program begins at 10:50 a.m. with the positioning of troops, followed by the arrival of authorities and a formal troop review at 11:15 a.m. According to the city’s official schedule, the ceremony will include a medal presentation at 11:25 a.m. before the traditional military march begins on Avenue Foch at 11:45 a.m. The parade will feature units from the Saumur military schools. A public reception is scheduled to follow at the Manège des Écuyers.

Historical Significance of the “Saumurois” Baptism

At 12:00 p.m., authorities will conduct a formal baptism of an EBRC Jaguar, naming the vehicle “Saumurois.” This initiative is a collaborative project between the Union Nationale des Combattants “Cadets de Saumur,” the city of Saumur, and local military schools.

The name serves as a tribute to the Stuart light tank operated by the 12th Régiment de Chasseurs d’Afrique. That tank was part of General Leclerc’s 2nd Armored Division during the 1944 Liberation of France. The original vehicle was destroyed in combat on August 12, 1944, near Alençon, at the village of Radon. By transferring this name to one of the French Army’s most modern combat vehicles, organizers aim to bridge the gap between historical military service and contemporary defense technology.

Educational Initiatives and Civic Duty

The baptism is part of a broader effort by the Saumur military schools to emphasize the importance of historical memory. These institutions have integrated “Defense Classes” into local educational programs to teach students about French military history and the values of citizenship.
