Jutta Leerdam’s Skate Suit Shatters Cristiano Ronaldo’s Auction Record
Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam has broken a record previously held by football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, after her iconic orange suit fetched a staggering €195,000 (approximately £170,453) at auction. The suit, worn during her successful Winter Olympics campaign, significantly surpassed the previous record for sports memorabilia sold on the MatchWornShirt (MWS) platform.
Record-Breaking Sale
Leerdam’s suit, a striking combination of orange and dark blue, was auctioned as part of a larger collection of memorabilia from the Dutch speed skating team following the Winter Olympics in Milan. The auction, organized by TeamNL and NOS*NSF (The Dutch Olympic Committee*Dutch Sports Federation), raised a total of €275,345 (£240,684). The winning bid for Leerdam’s suit rocketed from £8,416 to over £170,000 in just a few hours, with the successful bidder located in the Netherlands. The Sun and The Mirror both reported on the record-breaking sale.
Surpassing Ronaldo’s Record
The previous record for a sports memorabilia item sold on MWS was held by Cristiano Ronaldo, whose Portugal shirt from a match against Hungary in 2025 sold for just under €63,000 (£55,000). Leerdam’s suit more than tripled that amount, establishing a new benchmark for athlete-worn items. GB News highlighted the significance of surpassing Ronaldo’s previous record.
Proceeds to Support Local Sports Club
The funds raised from the auction will be donated to IJsvereniging Pijnacker (IJVP), the ice skating club where Leerdam began her sporting journey. Johan van Dam, chairman of IJVP, expressed the club’s gratitude and stated they would carefully consider how to best utilize the funds. Club official Jacquielin van Winden indicated they would discuss plans with the Leerdam family and NOC*NSF.
Leerdam’s Olympic Success
Leerdam achieved significant success at the Winter Olympics, winning gold in the 1000m and silver in the 500m events. The suit became iconic during her performances, contributing to its high demand at auction.
