Kacey Musgraves Returns to the Landscape of ‘Mexico Honey’
Kacey Musgraves has unveiled the official music video for “Mexico Honey,” a track from her sixth studio album, Middle of Nowhere. Shot on location in Mexico, the cinematic piece was helmed by the creative duo Running Bear, comprised of Alexa Stone and Stephen Kinigopoulos. According to an official statement, the video serves as a tribute to the country’s landscape while reflecting the personal inspiration Musgraves drew from her experiences there.
A Visual Study of Solitude
The video moves through a stark range of environments to mirror the song’s central themes. The camera pivots from neon-lit bars and nighttime urban streets to the lush, wild isolation of the jungle. In one striking sequence, Musgraves is filmed in a river, holding a snake—an image that anchors the album’s broader aesthetic exploration of emotional transition.
Musgraves has previously described the creation of Middle of Nowhere, released in April, as a period defined by self-reflection. “I found that for the first time, it actually felt incredible being alone and existing in a space not defined by anyone else,” she stated during the album’s announcement. She noted a fascination with “liminal space,” describing it as a geographical and emotional state where people often rush to define what comes next rather than lingering in the transition.
Roots of the Project
The title Middle of Nowhere stems from a sign Musgraves encountered in her hometown of Golden, Texas, which read: “Golden, TX: Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere.” The project boasts a deep bench of collaborators, including Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, and Gregory Alan Isakov.
Summer Arena Tour and Industry Honors
Musgraves is set to bring this material to North American arenas this fall. The tour launches on August 21 at the United Center in Chicago—coinciding with the artist’s birthday—and concludes in October with two performances at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. The run features a rotating roster of support, including Midland, Flatland Cavalry, Carter Faith, Estevie, Charles Wesley Godwin, William Beckmann, Gabriella Rose, and the Brudi Brothers.
Before the tour hits the road, Musgraves will be honored at the 19th ACM Honors in Nashville on August 19. The Academy of Country Music will present her with the ACM Spirit Award. Inspired by the legacy of Merle Haggard, the accolade recognizes artists who demonstrate a commitment to country music and storytelling through their performance and craft.
