Kali Linux 2026.1 Released: New Theme, BackTrack Mode & Tools Added

Kali Linux 2026.1: A Deep Dive into the Latest Release

Penetration testers and cybersecurity professionals have a new version of Kali Linux to explore. Kali Linux 2026.1 delivers the annual theme refresh, a nostalgic BackTrack-inspired mode in kali-undercover, eight new tools added to the network repositories, a kernel bump to version 6.18 and several Kali NetHunter updates.

2026 Theme Refresh

As with previous yearly releases, Kali Linux 2026.1 introduces a visual overhaul. The new theme extends to the boot menu, installer, login display, and desktop environment, accompanied by a fresh set of wallpapers. The Kali Purple variant also receives updated artwork, providing a modern aesthetic.

The boot animation has been refined, specifically for live images. Previously, the animation would get stuck, displaying only the tail end. It now plays through correctly and loops seamlessly if the boot process takes longer than expected.

BackTrack Mode for Kali-Undercover

This release marks the 20th anniversary of BackTrack Linux, Kali’s predecessor. To celebrate this milestone, a BackTrack mode has been added to the kali-undercover tool. This mode transforms the desktop to replicate the glance and feel of BackTrack 5, including the original wallpaper, color scheme, and window themes. Users can enable it from the menu or by running kali-undercover --backtrack in the terminal, and revert to the standard Kali desktop by running the command again.

Eight New Tools

Kali Linux 2026.1 expands its toolkit with the addition of eight new programs to its network repositories:

  • AdaptixC2 — An extensible post-exploitation and adversarial emulation framework.
  • Atomic-Operator — A tool for executing Atomic Red Team tests across multiple operating system environments.
  • Fluxion — A security auditing and social-engineering research tool.
  • GEF — Provides an advanced debugging experience for GDB.
  • MetasploitMCP — An MCP server for Metasploit.
  • SSTImap — An automatic SSTI detection tool with an interactive interface.
  • WPProbe — A fast WordPress plugin enumeration tool.
  • XSStrike — An advanced XSS scanner.

In addition to these new tools, the release includes 25 new packages, removes 9, and delivers 183 package updates. The kernel has been upgraded to version 6.18.

Known SDR Breakage

Users of the kali-tools-sdr metapackage, which encompasses Software Defined Radio tooling, may encounter issues with the GNU Radio ecosystem in this release. Tools such as gr-air-modes and gqrx-sdr are known to be broken. The Kali team anticipates a fix in the next release.

Kali NetHunter Updates

The NetHunter app receives several updates, including fixes for a WPS scan bug, HID permission handling, and the back button functionality. Device-specific changes are also included:

  • The Redmi Note 8 receives a new kernel for Android 16.
  • Samsung S10 series devices benefit from a patch to libnexmonkali, enabling the apply of internal wireless firmware in Kali chroot, bringing reaver, bully, and kismet into working order.

A first working wireless injection patch for QCACLD 3.0 hardware is also included, potentially unlocking injection capability for many phones running Qualcomm chipsets.
