Gang Violence Escalates in Kalksteenfontein, Cape Flats

Kalksteenfontein, a community within the Cape Flats region of South Africa, is grappling with a surge in gang-related violence. Recent incidents have resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, prompting calls for increased police intervention and community involvement.

Double Murder Sparks Further Violence

On Tuesday morning, two men, aged 33 and 43, were shot and killed inside a property on Hanekam Street in Kalksteenfontein. According to police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, Bishop Lavis police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred around 9:20 am. Sources indicate the incident may be linked to a dispute between the Terrible Josters and Fancy Boys gangs, with allegations that the victims were involved in drug trafficking.

Following the double murder, a separate shooting took place on Netreg Way at approximately 8:50 pm, leaving three men, aged 30, 32, and 36, injured. The victims were reportedly shot by occupants of a grey Toyota Yaris, which then fled the scene. Police suspect this shooting was also a targeted hit related to gang affiliation. The injured individuals were transported to a medical facility for treatment.

Community Concerns and Calls for Action

Amanda Davids, Chairperson of the Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum (CPF), expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, stating the community is “dik of the blood flowing in their streets.” Davids criticized what she perceives as a reactive approach from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and a lack of investment in the Cape Flats region.

Subcouncil 15 Chairperson Angus McKenzie appealed to residents to come forward with any information regarding the shootings, emphasizing the need to break the cycle of violence and remove the power held by gangs within the community. He stated that protecting gangsters inadvertently enables their harmful activities.

Ongoing Investigation

As of today, March 12, 2026, no arrests have been made in connection with either shooting. Both investigations are ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or utilize the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.
