Former Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Mississippi on Oct. 22, 2026, to rally voters for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Scott Colom, telling an energized crowd at Columbus High School that “Mississippi Matters.” The visit comes as national Democrats invest heavily in the ruby-red state’s competitive Senate race 12 days ahead of Election Day, the Mississippi Free Press reported.
Kamala Harris Rallies Voters in Columbus
Supporters packed the Columbus High School gymnasium on Oct. 22 to watch Harris campaign alongside Colom. The former vice president said Trump is leading “the most corrupt administration in American history,” and that Hyde-Smith, a devoted Trump ally, deserves to lose.
“We’ve got 12 days to make history,” Harris told the crowd. She emphasized that “the power is with the people. And the people are with Scott.”
Before the evening rally, Harris and Colom met with local doctors, a mother who lost a child due to inadequate healthcare access, and U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson at a community health center in Clarksdale for a roundtable discussion on rural healthcare, according to Mississippi Today.
National Democrats Pour Resources Into Mississippi
The race between Colom and incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith has drawn significant national attention. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer launched a last-minute large investment to assist Colom, while prominent figures including U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Raphael Warnock have campaigned in the state. Former President Barack Obama also filmed a supportive advertisement for the Democrat.
Republicans are mounting a counter-offensive. President Donald Trump is scheduled to travel to Corinth, Mississippi, on Oct. 26 to campaign for Hyde-Smith. Colom has repeatedly criticized Hyde-Smith for refusing to participate in pre-election debates, dubbing her “Cindy High Prices” and connecting her legislative record to rising living costs, tariffs, and a vote in favor of a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid.
Local Supporters Highlight Colom’s Record
Speakers at the Columbus rally focused heavily on Colom’s personal background and local ties. Attorney Damonta Morgan shared how the candidate took him in and offered support when he had no political or financial influence to offer in return.

“But Scott never did that math. He saw a kid who needed mentorship, and he decided that I was worth his time,” Morgan told the crowd. Speakers contrasted Colom’s accessibility with Hyde-Smith, whom critics point out has not spoken to her constituents for a whole Senate term.
Colom, who has spent the campaign trekking through all 82 Mississippi counties, spoke at his alma mater, emphasizing his roots in the community and pledging to prioritize high gas prices, the cost of living, and failing healthcare systems if elected.
