Dexter, Kansas School district Ends Fall Semester Early Due to Illness Outbreak
USD #471 in Dexter, Kansas, has announced the early conclusion of its fall semester, effective Monday, December 16th, 2025, due to a significant outbreak of illness affecting both students and staff. The decision was made to mitigate further spread of the illness, notably with the upcoming holiday break when individuals may gather with extended family.
According to a statement released by the school district, a “tremendous amount of sickness” is currently circulating at a “high rate.” This prompted officials to accelerate the end of the semester by three days from the originally scheduled date. All end-of-semester activities, including extra-curriculars and classes, will be postponed, canceled, or rescheduled for the spring semester.
The spring semester is currently scheduled to begin on January 5th,2026. The district expressed concern about potential transmission to vulnerable family members during the holidays as a key factor in their decision-making process.
While the specific nature of the illness has not been publicly detailed, the district is prioritizing the health and safety of its students and staff. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
