For decades, one unshakable truth has been repeated in biology and psychology textbooks: animals are prisoners of the present moment. The ability to dream, imagine non-existent worlds, and “play at something” was supposed to be a privilege that separated humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. Invisible juice and two realities

The lab scene looked more like child’s play than serious science. Psychologist Amalia Bastos of the University of St Andrews and cognitive scientist Christopher Krupenye of Johns Hopkins University sat opposite Kanzi with an empty pitcher and two transparent cups. The experiment was simple: the researcher pretended to pour juice into both containers. He then fictitiously “poured” one of the cups back into the jug.

If the ape was guided only by what he could physically see, he would have two empty containers in front of him and his choice would be purely random. But Kanzi didn’t guess. In 68 percent of cases (specifically in 34 out of 50 attempts) he reached for the cup, which according to the game script was still supposed to be “full”. He was similarly convincing in the test with fictitious grapes, where he achieved a success rate of 69%. In addition, control tests dispelled doubts that he was mindlessly repeating a learned pattern – when given a choice between real juice and “as if” juice, he clearly and logically preferred the real one.

Scientists call this phenomenon “secondary representation”. It means that Kanzi was able to hold two models of the world in his mind at the same time: the primary, physical reality (the cups are empty) and above it a fictitious layer (one cup contains juice). It is this ability that in humansa basic building block for planning the future or understanding the thoughts of others. However, the authors of the study remain down-to-earth and point out that this is not proof of the universal ability of all great apes. Kanzi was unique – an individual trained for a long time in symbols and living in human proximity, which could specifically shape his brain.

Bonobo Kanzi, who left us in 2025 at the age of 44, was not just another number in a statistic. He was a cognitive science celebrity and his home was the Ape Initiative research center in Iowa, USA. Fascinatingly, the language was not crushed mechanically, but “absorbed” by observing its adoptive mother, Matata, and the human researchers, much like young children learn. He learned to communicate using lexigrams – a special keyboard with hundreds of abstract symbols, understood hundreds of English words, was able to make a stone tool and responded to complex sentence instructions.

Bonobo: The Forgotten Hippie of the Forest

Bonobos were long mistakenly considered to be only a subspecies of chimpanzees, but today we know that they are about separate specieswhich separated from chimpanzees between one and two million years ago.They are often nicknamed “the hippies of the forest”and although science cautions against oversimplifying their utter pacifism, the differences from chimpanzees are obvious. While the chimpanzee world is full of aggression, with bonobos, females and coalitions play a dominant role. Here, conflicts are resolved through social contact rather than brute force. It is this complex social dynamic and the need to “read” other members of the pack that may have been the evolutionary basis for their high intelligence.

The clues to the animal imagination had been there before, the proof was just missing. Primatologist Richard Wrangham, for example, previously documented female chimpanzees carrying sticks in a way that was strikingly reminiscent of caring for their young – as if they were playing with dolls. An earlier study by Heidi Lyn’s team in 2006 in turn indicated that representational play appears especially in apes that have undergone symbolic training.

Combining these shards with experimental data from 2026 takes the debate a step further. It doesn’t mean that apes have the same wild imagination as humans. But it means that the ability to create “second worlds” in the head probably did not arise until the arrival of Homo sapiens. Its roots can go deep, perhaps as far as 6 to 9 million years back to the common ancestor of all of us. Kanzi’s invisible juice does not mean the end of the differences between us and them, but it does show that the gulf between human and non-human minds is much shallower than we have long thought in our pride.
