The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has handled a record-breaking volume of cargo in the current fiscal year, surpassing its previous all-time high of 54.685 million tonnes set in FY17-18. According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, this surge in throughput reflects both increased port efficiency and a strategic shift in regional shipping routes as global vessels navigate changing geopolitical conditions.

Infrastructure Reforms Fuel Operational Gains

The KPT confirmed that it moved 53.951m tonnes of cargo in the previous fiscal year (FY24-25) before eclipsing that total in the current cycle. Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry stated that the record is a direct result of the ministry’s ongoing reform agenda, which focuses on modernizing infrastructure and expanding operational capacity to meet international standards.

Milestones in Containerized Trade

Beyond total tonnage, the port reached a significant milestone in containerized trade, handling more than 2.65 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This growth is supported by an increase in transhipment activity. In May, the first-ever fully transhipment cargo vessel arrived at KPT, signaling a transition toward becoming a regional transhipment hub.

Geopolitical Shifts Drive New Traffic

The surge in activity at Karachi’s ports is linked to shifts in global maritime logistics. As shipping lines seek to avoid regional instability due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Iran war, many have diverted vessels toward Pakistani ports. This influx of traffic has necessitated improved coordination between the KPT management and private sector stakeholders. KPT Chairman Rear Admiral (retired) Shahid Ahmed noted that the record-breaking performance is the result of sustained teamwork and strategic planning.
