Fatal Collision in Ijamsville Claims Life of Rising Star
Kaylee Hottle, the 18-year-old actress celebrated for her role as Jia in the Godzilla franchise, has died following a car accident in Maryland. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Hottle was a passenger in a vehicle that struck a culvert in Ijamsville early on July 21.
Investigation into the Early Morning Crash
The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. Investigators reported that a Honda Accord, in which Hottle was a passenger, exited the roadway and collided with a culvert. Emergency responders transported Hottle to a trauma center, where she was later pronounced dead.
The 19-year-old driver sustained injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening, and a second passenger declined medical attention at the scene. While the investigation remains ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office stated that speed is currently considered a contributing factor in the crash.
A Legacy Defined by Representation
Born in Atlanta in 2007, Hottle was a member of a multigenerational deaf family. She earned industry recognition for her portrayal of Jia, a young survivor from Skull Island who communicated with Kong through American Sign Language (ASL).
Her performance in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) marked her feature film debut. She later reprised the role in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). Her work on the franchise earned her a nomination for Best Younger Actor in a Film at the 52nd Saturn Awards. Beyond her film work, Hottle appeared in a 2017 advertisement for the video conferencing service Convo and participated in the project 10 Deaf Children: One Powerful Message, which focused on equality and representation for the deaf community.
Texas School for the Deaf Mourns Senior Student
At the time of her death, Hottle was a senior at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD). The school issued a statement mourning the loss of their student, noting the impact she had on her classmates and the wider community.
“With deep sadness, we share the heartbreaking news of the tragic passing of Kaylee Hottle, one of our TSD seniors,” the school stated. “Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her during this difficult time.”
