KDE Plasma 6.7: What’s New in the Latest Desktop Release
If you’re a KDE Plasma user, you’ve likely already begun exploring the new KDE Plasma 6.6 update. But, the KDE team is already hard at work on Plasma 6.7, aiming to make it the best release yet. Thanks to the open-source nature of Plasma, we can preview the changes in development through the weekly “This Week in Plasma” blog posts.
Rounded Highlights for a Consistent UI
One of the most noticeable changes coming in Plasma 6.7 is a redesign of selection highlights in Breeze-themed applications like Dolphin, Okular, and KMail. These highlights will now feature rounded corners, aligning them with the style already used for list highlights and menu items. This change isn’t just aesthetic; it’s part of a broader effort to consistently style UI elements from a central location using the upcoming Union styling system. As Akseli Lahtinen and Marco Martin explain in a Breeze MR #583, this will pave the way for a more unified visual experience.
New Features in Plasma 6.7
Plasma 6.7 will introduce several new features, including:
- Vietnamese Lunar Calendar: The Digital Clock widget will gain support for the Vietnamese lunar calendar.
- Improved Kickoff Favorites: A better visual alert will confirm when an app is favorited in the Kickoff application launcher.
- Revoke All Remote Casting: A new toggle in the Application Permissions page will allow users to quickly revoke all active remote casting sessions.
- Wayland Background Effects: Plasma 6.7 will add support for the Wayland ext-background-effect-v1 protocol, standardizing background effects like blur.
- L2TP VPN Options: Network settings will now expose L2TP VPN options.
- Restored Air Plasma Theme: The classic Air Plasma desktop theme from KDE 4 is being restored as a lightweight alternative to the Oxygen style.
- Global Shortcut for Notification History: Users will be able to set a global keyboard shortcut to clear their notification history.
- Emoji Skin Tone Groupings: The Emoji skin selector window will allow users to choose mixed skin tone groupings of emojis.
- Cursor Theme Previews: Cursor theme settings will receive more accurate previews.
- KWin Black Screen Fix: A fix is included for an issue where KWin could cause the screen to go black during intensive Alt+Tab usage.
- KRDP Systemd Dependency Removed: KDE remote desktop support (KRDP) will no longer require systemd.
