KDE Releases Plasma 6.8 and Retires X11
KDE Plasma 6.8 arrives as a 30th-anniversary milestone release that officially ends native support for X11 desktop sessions, following a path similar to GNOME’s 2025 default transition. Released on October 14, the update marks three decades of development for the free, open-source software project alongside a debut movie release. While the desktop environment drops native X11 startup options, legacy applications continue to function through the XWayland compatibility layer, and KDE applications maintain X11 support under alternative desktop environments.
New System Features and Hardware Performance Improvements
Under-the-hood performance updates enable NVIDIA GPUs to use triple-buffering by default, while HDR now integrates more cleanly with ICC color profiles. The Plasma Shell starts up faster and consumes less memory when managing numerous active widgets. Users can now assign specific processes to individual CPU cores via the updated System Monitor by right-clicking a process and selecting the affinity option. Additional desktop refinements include expanded third-party window decoration support for shadows and rounded corners, a streamlined Union theming system, and kscreenctl, a new command-line tool for power user display configurations.

Backup Integration and Multimedia Capture Updates
Built-in utilities receive functional expansions across the entire stack. The Kup backup utility is now integrated directly into Plasma, providing automated backup routines for external media storage. Spectacle, the native screen capture tool, gains the ability to record system audio and microphone inputs simultaneously alongside visual screen contents. Accessibility features expand with a new click-dwell activation mode for users mousing over user interface elements, alongside cultural additions such as the Hindu Bikram Sambat calendar in the Digital Clock applet and Amharic support for the on-screen keyboard.
Distribution Timelines and Release Availability
Rolling-release Linux distributions make Plasma 6.8 available to install in the coming days, while Ubuntu-based KDE neon delivers the software package as a system update in the coming weeks. Due to the timing of the release schedule, Kubuntu 26.10 ships with the point release of the KDE Plasma 6.7.x series rather than the new 30th Anniversary Edition. Users choosing to remain on Plasma 6.7 retain their existing X11 sessions for the time being.
