Kehler Messdi: Germany’s Largest Traditional Folk Festival Prepares for 2026
Kehl, Germany, is gearing up for the 2026 Kehler Messdi, the largest traditional folk festival in the Ortenau region. With over 195,000 visitors in the past year, the festival is a significant cultural and economic event for the city and surrounding areas. Preparations are already underway for the event, which will kick off on May 14th, Christi Himmelfahrt (Ascension Day).
Months of Planning for a Major Event
The Kehl Marketing organization is responsible for the organization of the Messdi for the third consecutive time. The planning process involves extensive coordination with various city departments, police, emergency services, and external service providers. “The Messdi is a huge community project where many areas interlock,” says Antje Lenz, Tourism Director at Kehl Marketing.1
Following the conclusion of the previous festival, preparations for the next iteration began almost immediately. Feedback from partners and attendees is carefully evaluated and incorporated into the planning process. Key areas of focus include program planning, exhibitor selection, site layout, traffic and parking management, sponsorship acquisition, marketing, and technical coordination. Nearly all 19 employees of Kehl Marketing are involved in the organization.
What to Expect at the 2026 Messdi
More than 50 program points are planned across four stages.1 The festival will feature a diverse range of food and beverage vendors, amusement rides, and live music. The Kehl Marketing team aims for a balanced mix of gastronomy, trade, and showmen’s offerings, prioritizing local and regional providers and associations. Demand for exhibition space consistently exceeds availability.
Enhanced Safety and Logistics
Security measures are being enhanced, with increased costs and planning time dedicated to ensuring visitor safety. Kehl Marketing is working closely with the police, fire department, emergency services, traffic management, and the Red Cross. Road closures will be in effect throughout the event. Indutainers – large, collapsible containers used as barriers – will be deployed to prevent unauthorized vehicle access.1
Parking and transportation are also being carefully managed. Parking attendants will be stationed at the Läger parking lot to ensure smooth traffic flow. A dedicated Messdi-Bus service will provide convenient transportation to the festival grounds. The Messdi-Becher (festival cup) will again be used to minimize glass breakage, and the Messdi-Fünfer voucher will be available for employ at stands and participating retailers.
Collaboration and Preparation
The Kehl Marketing team collaborates closely with the city’s operating yard to prepare the festival grounds, including setting up fencing, barriers, and power lines for over 100 stands and attractions. The actual setup begins the Monday before the festival opens.
