EastEnders star Kellie Bright is leaving the BBC soap opera after 13 years of playing landlady Linda Carter, according to reports from the BBC and Live95. Bright first arrived in Albert Square in 2013 alongside her on-screen husband Mick Carter, portrayed by Danny Dyer, as the new owners of the Queen Vic pub. During her tenure, Bright’s character has remained at the center of the show’s major dramatic plots, spanning murder, alcoholism, grief, and family breakdowns.

Deciding to Leave Albert Square

Bright made the tough decision to leave the long-running serial more than a year ago, according to statements reported by the BBC. However, after discussing her departure with executive producer Ben Wadey and former executive producer Kate Oates, she agreed to stay longer to participate in a forthcoming storyline. According to the BBC, viewers will have to wait a while before her final on-screen exit, with producers promising unmissable drama ahead of her departure.

“EastEnders has been my home for thirteen years and I have absolutely loved being part of the show, but I have decided that it is now the right time for me to say goodbye,” Bright stated, as reported by Live95. She added that she is looking forward to her next chapter and spending more time with her husband and three sons.

A Decade of High-Stakes Storylines

As the matriarch of the Carter family and the landlady of Walford’s iconic pub for approximately a decade, Bright’s character drove several of the program’s most heavily viewed and discussed episodes. In 2014, more than seven million people tuned in to watch an episode where Linda was raped by her brother-in-law Dean Wicks, a storyline that initiated a long-running narrative about family conflict and trauma, as detailed by the BBC.

Additional major plot points for the character included navigating life as a single mother after her husband Mick vanished into the sea in 2022 while trying to save Janine Butcher, according to BBC reporting. In the dramatic 2023 Christmas Day episode, Linda stabbed Keanu Taylor to death to protect her friend Sharon Watts, played by Letitia Dean. More recently, the character managed a bed-and-breakfast and navigated several new romances.

Producer Tribute and Future Direction

Executive producer Ben Wadey paid tribute to the departing actor, describing her as the beating heart of EastEnders and noting that she has secured her status as a classic soap icon. Beyond her work in Walford, Bright’s career includes a 2015 appearance on Strictly Come Dancing and film roles in Ali G Indahouse and Kinky Boots.
