Kenya Floods: River Nyando Overflow Causes Displacement and Disruption

Kenya is grappling with severe flooding across 21 counties, resulting in at least 88 deaths and the displacement of over 34,000 people. Recent heavy rains have caused rivers to burst their banks, disrupting transportation and endangering communities. The situation is particularly critical along the River Nyando in western Kenya, where the Ahero Bridge route has been affected.

River Nyando Overflow and Travel Disruptions

On Monday, March 25, 2026, the River Nyando overflowed at Ahero Bridge, submerging sections of the Kericho-Awasi-Kisumu road and causing significant travel disruptions. The government has issued an urgent advisory urging motorists to avoid the flooded route and seek alternative roads.

Traffic to and from Kisumu is being diverted at Timboroa through Lesos to Kapsabet–Chavakali–Kisumu until the situation stabilizes. Authorities advise extra caution, especially at night, due to the difficulty in gauging the depth and strength of the flowing water. Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Dr. Fredrick Ochieng’ emphasized the need to avoid crossing flooded sections.

Rescue Efforts and Displacement

Rescue teams, including the Kenya Red Cross Society, have intensified efforts in the worst-hit areas. In the Nyando area, over 200 people and 200 livestock have been evacuated, and at least two families were rescued from immediate danger. Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura reiterated the advisory, prioritizing public safety.

Authorities are working to evacuate over 900 students from Ahero Girls National School as floodwaters continue to rise. At least 265 households in the area have been affected, with displaced residents being sheltered in public facilities such as government offices, churches, and health centers. Six unaccompanied children are currently under care.

Widespread Flooding Across Kenya

The flooding extends beyond the Nyando River region. In Tana River county, the River Tana has burst its banks, flooding farms in Mbalambala and Asako village, threatening food production. The Ministry of Interior and National Administration reports that Uasin Gishu county is also experiencing rising water levels along the Sosiani River, impacting residential and hospitality facilities in Lower Elgon View.
