Kevin Durant and Mat Ishbia clash over Phoenix Suns tenure

Kevin Durant and Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia traded public barbs over social media regarding the superstar forward’s tenure with the franchise. The dispute erupted after Ishbia described his acquisition of Durant in a televised interview by stating he threw money at the problem and noting that rostering elite talent does not guarantee a championship. Durant, now with the Houston Rockets, fired back on social media by criticizing the characterization and pointing to his high level of play at age 36.
The online back-and-forth began on a Saturday when Durant took issue with Ishbia’s remarks on CNBC Sport. Ishbia remarked that bringing in a player of Durant’s caliber in 2023 was an expensive effort that ultimately fell short of delivering a title. Durant responded on social media with the hashtag #blamekd, writing that he maintained a high standard of play and helped restore the team’s culture. Durant also wrote, “Oye, Matthew, parece como si me hubieran detenido por conducir bajo los efectos del alcohol o algo así,” comparing the public framing of his exit to an unrelated legal incident.
Ishbia replied on the platform by clarifying that he did not blame Durant individually and expressed satisfaction with the current culture being built in Phoenix under new leadership. Durant offered a final retort, stating that the owner did not need to pay an absurd amount of money for him to play elsewhere. Meanwhile, Ishbia stated during his interview cycle that the roster fit simply did not align with his long-term vision for the organization.
.
The friction traces back to 2023, when Ishbia purchased the Suns for $4 billion and promptly traded for Durant to chase an immediate championship. On-court results failed to meet expectations despite Durant’s strong individual production. Phoenix reached the second round of the playoffs in 2023, suffered a 4-0 sweep in the first round in 2024, and missed the postseason entirely in 2025. Durant was subsequently traded to the Houston Rockets during the offseason.
Following Durant’s departure, Ishbia overhauled the front office and coaching staff by hiring general manager Brian Gregory and head coach Jordan Ott. Despite low external expectations for the revamped roster, the Suns finished the following season with a 45-37 record and reached the first round of the playoffs utilizing a core group of players that included Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks, and Jalen Green. Ishbia emphasized that the new roster reflects his personal vision for character both on and off the court.
