Double Fine’s Kiln: A Multiplayer Pottery Brawler is Coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC
Double Fine Productions is set to release Kiln, a unique “multiplayer online pottery party brawler,” on April 23, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, and Steam. The game, initially conceived during a 2014 internal game jam, will also be available day one with Game Pass.
Gameplay: Sculpt, Battle, and Destroy
Kiln centers around players using a virtual pottery wheel to create “Vessels” – clay bodies inhabited by spirits. The shape and size of these Vessels directly impact gameplay, influencing a character’s health, water capacity, and speed. Smaller pots offer faster attacks, while larger, slower pots provide more power. The chosen shape – bowl, bottle, chalice, and more – determines the character’s unique special ability. Cosmetic decorations do not affect gameplay.
Quench: The Core Multiplayer Mode
The primary multiplayer mode, “Quench,” pits two teams of four players against each other. The objective is to collect water and extinguish the opposing team’s kiln three times. Combat involves attempting to smash enemy Vessels, with damage determined by physics rather than traditional health bars, causing Vessels to chip, crack, and shatter.
Maps and Features
Maps feature interactive elements, such as sponges that can be saturated with water to create barriers, and a “disco dance floor” that forces players to dance on flashing squares. The game does not include in-game voice chat, but players can utilize console party features or third-party applications like Discord for communication.
Open Beta and Editions
An open beta will be held on Steam from April 9 to 11, 2026, with pre-orders becoming available at that time. The base version of Kiln is priced at $20. A “Fired Up” edition, costing $30, includes premium cosmetic options and extra chips – the in-game currency used for customizations. Chips can also be earned through gameplay.
Platform Availability and Optimization
Kiln is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S on April 23, 2026. Xbox has confirmed that the game will be “Handheld Optimized.”
